Sub Meat: Submeat your hunger
So I got this case study challenge from a friend, it’s a business case study. I have to create a business plan with a scenario like this:
- Choose the product: Sandwich or Bakery, and why you choose it
- Pick the store location and explain why
- Define the product cost
- Measure the business progress
This is interesting because honestly my background is not business nor have work experience in the business division. The only business thing that related to my work is to hear them as my stakeholder and to reject their request that not make sense 😁 So this is something new for me and I feel the challenge to do this.
Although I have experience created a business plan back in 2010 when I wanted to open a Warnet & Game Center. I remember I already pick the building that I want to set up the Game Center, a 2 storeys building. I visited all Warnet and Game Center in radius 2 km from the building. I take note about how many computers they have, what is their specification, how fast is their internet, what other services they provide, do they offer drink or food and many other things that I watch carefully from “ my become competitor”. I created the business forecast, calculate the operational cost, how many employees do I need and the estimation seat occupancy. Based on the calculation, I will have the BEP on the 30th month with 10 computers running, 75% of seat occupancy and average hour usage is 11 hours. Oh ya, the Game Center wannabe name is “3Ping” 😅 I find out that I still keep that Business Plan doc file in my computer.
Ok back to the test case, let see what I can do with this. First, we have to choose the product, Sandwich or Bakery. Definitely Sandwich! Why? Well, the question that has equal value with Why is “ Why Not?” Who doesn’t love Sandwiches? 😚 Because I love sandwiches a lot and I want to do something that I love. I love making sandwiches and I love to create the yummy and tasty sandwich ever that make you drool. I choose the sandwich because to me it’s personal and by giving personal touch into the sandwich it will become not just a product but also an artwork, a masterpiece. That’s why Thanos make it as personal in Endgame.

I will create a brand for this Sandwich Business. I like to use “ Sub Meat” with the slogan “ Submeat your hunger”.

Second, where do I want to open the store? This tickled me, why do I need to open a physical store? We are living in an era where you can get most of everything with just a fingertip, it’s an Industry 4.0. I will engage with Go-Food and GrabFood to sell and deliver the sandwiches. I will register at Tokopedia and Bukalapak so people can search for my sandwich and buy it. I can apply to DOKU and use the Paybuddy to sell sandwiches over social media and messenger app. I can take advantages from those methods by having their cashback promo and can accept many payment methods. I don’t need to maintain so many employees, I don’t need to think of the store design, furniture cost, space rent, etc so I can focus on the sandwiches itself. Sometimes we care so much of other detail but forget the core part of the problem.

3rd, define the product cost. Well, the signature sandwich that I will create will have a 9-inch long parmesan oregano wheat bread with slices of beef bacon, pepperoni or turkey breast, salami, mozzarella cheese, black olives, onions, lettuces, tomatoes and honey mustard dressing. The variable cost for this sandwich will be around 70,000 IDR. Fixed cost every month will be around 7,000,000 IDR. If I set the price for this signature sandwich to 90,000 IDR then I need to have at least 350 orders to have a BEP each month.
And the last one, we have to measure if our business is running well. The easiest way to measure the growth of our business is to look at the number of orders. How many sales that we have. Is it going up every week, or is it just stable, or maybe it’s going down. We have target 350 orders per month, so that will be our baseline number. Lower than that, then we just one step away from disaster. Other than sales, we can check based on repeat orders or the number of new customers. Thank god that we use the online app, so we can use their data analysis to help us find out more closely about our customers.

One note, to get to know if my sandwich is acceptable or not, I will start with free samples of the sandwich to a group of people. Let say they are my surveyor target so I can have feedback from them, hear their inputs and try to use those inputs when I create the next sandwich. This will be a repeat process and become an R & D project before start selling the sandwiches. With this process, I can find out the expected sandwich that accepts by people.
As a start, I need 2 employees to help me do the meal and packaging preparation. The store itself will have 3 employees including me. We will use my house as the main production factory. We have to add additional kitchen tools. We need to pay gas and electricity. Every morning we have to buy vegetables so we can have a fresh one. Meat can be stored in the freezer. We will try to reduce plastic use because it’s not good for the environment. We use the power of social media and the marketplace. We will use existing tools like digital ads, endorser and promo ads in the marketplace. In the first 3 months, we will have a promo to acquire customers as many as we can, so we need to prepare 6-month funds to cover the operational cost.
Ok, that is my 2 cents, a business case from a newbie. It’s not a Warren Buffet business plan, but yes I believe it will work. It just one thing that worried me. How can I survive the temptation to eat my super yummy delicious Sandwich?
